If you were to talk to the shamans, the sages, the mystics and the wisdom keepers of all ages, from all corners of the planet and ask them about the healing power of nature, you would hear a common theme in their responses:

When we take time to listen to the songs of the earth, the healing rhythms and majestic dynamics of nature's intent are undeniable to the wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. This is the message of Earth Songs, and it’s a message we need now more than ever, for ourselves and for the planet itself.

The seeds of inspiration for the film, Earth Songs, were planted several decades ago in the formative years of my youth. As a young teenager I was quite moved by a movie I saw in high school. It was the late ‘60s and people were becoming socially active in all areas; from civil rights to the environment. This (short) movie was scored to the song, America the Beautiful, but rather than seeing scenes that corresponded to the imagery of the lyrics, the scenes depicted the atrocities of air and water pollution. The implicit message was that we are killing our planet.

“Unbelievable… How did you film all of this?
I am floored, amazed and honored to watch
this important message. Everyone on the planet
needs to see this.”—Connie Clancy, Sanibel, Island, FL

Shift ahead a few decades; A study printed in a medical journal cited results that hospital patients who had a view of trees (and perhaps other aspects of nature) were discharged from the hospital quicker than those who did not have the same view. The conclusions drawn from the study underscored the perennial wisdom of the ages: Nature heals! Between these two significant events formed a constellation of National Geographic specials, BBC documentaries and abundant camping trips, all of which solidified my ongoing love affair with nature.

It may be our current adoration with technology, or it may be shear laziness and apathy, but a dangerously wide chasm now exists between humans and the natural world. Some are now calling this abyss a “nature deficit disorder.” Earth Songs (now two films in one DVD… a documentary and a meditation) was made to bridge this gap.

While some people are preparing an obituary for planet earth, I wanted to create a celebration on film, a tribute to the beauty of our terrestrial home and our delicate relationship with it. My wish is that by viewing the film, people would renew their relationship with Mother Nature. It’s time.

My house is one big “Earth Box” filled with pinecones, seashells, empty birds nests and scores of abandoned feathers, not to mention tumble stones and rocks from all corners of the world. No matter what earthly souvenirs I was able to bring home from various trips, it was never enough to satisfy my hunger to surround myself with the divine.

My house is also one big art gallery of photography (mostly my own); images and enchanted memories of my courtship with planet earth: Icebergs in Greenland, Rainbows in Kauai, Alpenglow colors of dawn over the Tetons, wildlife everywhere, and the pristine blue glacial lakes of the Canadian Rockies, to name a few.

“This movie took my breath away.
Every scene surpassed the last.
This exceeded all expectations.
Congratulations on an exceptional job.”
-Mark S. Johnson, Boulder, CO”

In the Spring of 2007, the night before I flew off to Patagonia Chile on a photo expedition, I went out and bought a high definition video camera with the hopes to film the magic of a mountain range that captivated my imagination for decades; Torres Del Paine. In the blink of an eye, I transformed myself from photographer to filmmaker.

On the flight back from Chile, I made a list of all the breathtaking places I had traveled to on the planet and added to this list all the places I had yet to go, but knew a film on the healing power of nature would be quite incomplete without. As you can imagine, my list was quite long, so long in fact, that no bank account (save Bill Gates’) could afford it. This fact did not deter me from my ambitions (a common problem with first time filmmakers, I was to discover).

After Patagonia, I saved my money and susequently traveled to the Caribbean (Dominica and St. Lucia). Soon thereafter, like a siren, Hawaii, (specifically the Na Pali Coast), called to me in my dreams. It wasn’t long before I found myself on a plane to Lihui. In the course of two years my passport was stamped with the words: Iceland, Peru, Greenland, Canada, Chile, New Zealand and the Virgin Islands (both US and British).

Stateside trips included treks to Maine, Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, and Florida. Of course, my home state of Colorado features predominantly in this film as well. In fact, many scenaries were filmed in my back yard, which (with a telephoto lens) gazes upon Rocky Mountain National Park, or the nature reserve down the street.

“I just love the new Earth Songs DVD--it
made me cry—the beauty—the serenity
--Michael York--the golden voice--loved him too.
But oh my, the work you put into this DVD
--you deserve an Oscar and to go on Oprah."
-Jane Searles, Bangor, ME

My first stroke of luck with directing this movie began when legendary actor, Michael York (Cabaret, Logan’s Run, Three Musketeers, Austin Powers), whom I had collaborated before on a project with Jane Goodall, accepted my invitation to narrate Earth Songs. Not only did he believe in the project, he said, but he really helped refine the script (the British have such a great way with words).

Good luck appeared once more, when an initial contact to purchase the rights to a piece of music for the meditation film from award winning musician, Brian Keane, progressed to Brian offering to score the documentary. Brian is no stranger to documentary films having worked with Ken and Ric Burns (of PBS fame). He and his team of sound editors performed magic.

The result is an alchemy of stunning footage, narrative and music to inspire the heart and soul for years to come. Earth Songs: The Meditation also contains a score of music from around the world (e.g. Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Australia, England, and North America). In the spirit of healing, this relaxing video will be made available in hospitals across the country for cancer patients and the chronically ill and a portion of proceeds from the sale of Earth Songs ($25) will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

"With elegant simplicity, Brian Luke Seaward shows us the path to the deep wisdom that exists within all of us. And he is a masterful storyteller.”

~~ Deepak Chopra, M.D. Author of Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
